Where your money is

The rule

  1. The cash waiting at XTB is spread evenly over the Fridays until the next dividend (mid-April).
  2. The further SPPW is below its highest price, the more you buy: +10% of the normal amount for every 1% it is down.
  3. On any day SPPW drops another 5%, buy an extra half week's amount. At −40%, put in everything that is left.

Decide on Friday's closing price, place the order on Monday (Xetra closes Friday 18:30 Romanian time).

Each spring, when the dividend arrives

    If things go wrong

    1. No dividend, or less than €30,000: stop buying that year, keep the €50,000, fix the gap within 3 months (rents, then spending, then work).
    2. Bills: pay from the bank, then from the cash waiting at XTB. Only if both are empty, sell SPPW for 6 months of bills. The €50,000 is the last thing you touch.
    3. Interest rates fall: if the euro interest rate (€STR) drops below 0.74%, move the XEON part of the floor to the bank.

    Why this rule

Over 10 years, spreading the money over the year ends up slightly behind putting each lump in at once: about €11,000 behind in normal markets, about €6,000 ahead if a crash comes early, about €60,000 behind if there is no crash for 10 years. That is the price of buying calmly. In the tests the €50,000 was not spent while SPPW was still held; if the dividends stop for good, money can still run out, which is why the income-stop rule exists.

How far these numbers go: 5,000 simulated futures built from 1999–2022 weekly prices, in today's euros (euro-area inflation). They were run for a close relative of this rule: the waiting cash held in a money-market fund (not as cash), the fall measured from the highest weekly close since the start (not the all-time high), and no extra buys between Fridays. The exact rule on this page has not been simulated as a whole; expect costs of the same size, plus about €500 a year of lower interest on the cash.
